How to maximise your water damage payout

Insurers settle what you claim for — not what you're entitled to. The gap between the two is often thousands. Here's how to close it.

Claim for everything you're entitled to

A full water damage settlement is more than a repair bill. Make sure yours includes:

  • Buildings — structural drying and repair, not just what's visible.
  • Contents — everything ruined, at proper replacement value.
  • Trace and access — finding the leak and reinstating afterwards.
  • Alternative accommodation — if your home is uninhabitable.

Use the evidence checklist

The more thorough your evidence, the harder it is for an insurer to leave items out.

Get your own quotes

Don't rely solely on the insurer's figures. Independent repair and restoration quotes give you a benchmark — and leverage — when the offer comes in low.

Reinstatement vs betterment

You're entitled to be put back to where you were (reinstatement). Insurers sometimes deduct for betterment— arguing a repair leaves you better off than before. That deduction has to be fair, and it's often applied too heavily.

Challenge a low offer

A first offer is an offer, not a final figure. If it's below your independent quotes or misses covered items, say so in writing and back it with evidence. If it stalls, you can escalate to the Financial Ombudsman or bring in a loss assessor.

Common questions

How do I get the most from a water damage claim?
Document everything before clean-up, claim for all covered losses (buildings, contents, trace and access, alternative accommodation), get your own repair quotes, and never accept the first offer without checking it against the true cost of reinstatement.
What is betterment on an insurance claim?
Betterment is where a repair leaves you 'better off' than before — e.g. a brand-new kitchen replacing an old one. Insurers may try to deduct for it, but the deduction has to be fair and is often applied too aggressively.
